Exploring Bonaire with Kids: A Family Vacation Guide for Luxury Villa Living with Sun Rentals Bonaire

Bonaire is a beautiful Caribbean island known for its stunning beaches, crystal clear waters, and vibrant marine life. It’s the perfect destination for a family vacation, and staying at a luxury villa with Sun Rentals Bonaire will make your trip even more special.
Bonaire activities with kids
For the young ones (age 0 – 5):
Swim in the Caribbean Sea or play on the beach in the morning, there are some natural beaches with shade from trees. Be sure the apply sunscreen as the sun is hot, especially for the little ones. Bonaire is a very eco-friendly island; we ask you to use reef safe sunscreen.
Visit the donkey sanctuary in the afternoon and feed some of the 800 donkeys living here, you’ll be guaranteed of an afternoon full of laughter and fun!
Have a dinner at any of the delicious restaurants in Kralendijk and stroll the boulevard, maybe stop for an ice cream at either Luciano’s or Gio for the best ice cream on Bonaire.
Other fun activities for the little ones:
Take a tour with the Bon Sea Submarine, a semi submarine with glass bottom (and AC) will take you along the beautiful reefs of Bonaire.
Sorobon beach: a beautiful bay with shallow water and windsurfing activities. Perfect spot to hang out for a day. Have lunch at Jibe City while the kids play in the very shallow water right next to you.
Tour the national park and spot wildlife in the national park, see if you can find the flamingo, pelican, parrot, iguana’s and goats!
Explore the south of the island and stop at the salt mountains and the pink salt lakes.
Activities for the older kids
Diving: From the age of 5 kids are allowed to join the PADI SASY program where they will wear a BCD and scuba equipment and play in the pool, while staying on the surface. They will experience breathing from a regulator and floating on the surface.
From the age of 8 – 10 they can join the seal team where they can go to a maximum depth of 2m/6ft.
From 10 and up they can become a junior open water diver (with some restrictions regarding depth).
Other activities: Take windsurfing lessons at Sorobon Beach or maybe try Kitesurfing for the adrenaline kick!
Don’t want to get wet? Try landsailing on the east coast of the island with Bonaire Land Sailing Adventures. You’re on a blokart with three wheels and a sail and drive around a race track. You can hire a few individual blokarts and make it a family race! The young ones can join you in the 2 seater blokart.
Kayak in the mangroves: Take a kayak tour in the mangroves and navigate your kayak through a maze of natural tree tunnels. Learn about the mangroves and their importance to a healthy reef.
Climb the brandaris mountain: Hike all the way to the top of the Brandaris mountain in the Washington Slagbaai National Park. On a clear day you can even spot Curacao from up here! Be sure to take enough water with you.
Discover downtown Kralendijk: Stroll through the little shopping street in Kralendijk (shopping guide here), have ice cream on the boulevard and have dinner in one of the great restaurants
- Visit the Bonaire National Marine Park: Bonaire is known for its beautiful coral reefs and marine life, and the National Marine Park is the perfect place to explore them. You can snorkel or dive in the park’s crystal clear waters, and see a wide variety of fish and other marine animals, such as sea turtles, rays and even octopus.
- Go on a jeep safari: If you’re looking for an adventure, a jeep safari is a great option. You’ll be able to explore the island’s rugged terrain, see the island’s unique flora and fauna, and even visit a traditional Bonairean farm.
- Visit the Donkey Sanctuary: As mentioned before, Bonaire’s Donkey Sanctuary is a great place to visit with kids. You’ll be able to feed and pet the donkeys and learn about their history and importance to the island.
- Go on a guided kayak tour: Bonaire’s mangrove forrest, a great place to explore by kayak. You’ll be able to see a wide variety of birds and other animals, and enjoy the island’s beautiful scenery.
- Visit the Bonaire Museum: The island’s museum is an excellent place to learn about Bonaire’s history and culture. The exhibits are interactive and kids friendly.
